FOODS OF TURKEY
We are pleased to introduce you to a series of articles on the topic of Turkish wine, a much less explored topic in the world of wine, but one that certainly deserves some attention from the wine lovers. Through our articles on the Turkish wine regions and grapes, and our reviews of individual wines and tasting notes, we hope to help you explore this exciting but relatively unknown topic with us and peak your interest in this unique region and its producers.
In this piece, in the map provided, you will find an introductory overview of the regions of wine production and the grapes produced in each region of Turkey. With its accommodating climate, Turkey has been a wine producing region for more than 6000 years. The climate allows for the production of well known grapes like Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc, along with a substantial list of region’s own unique grapes as listed on the map.
Among the regions that produce the most reputable wines are Central, Eastern and Southeastern Anatolia due to their dry climates and Marmara with a cooler climate. Among the most reputable cities for wine production are Elazığ, Diyarbakır (Eastern Anatolia), Denizli, Kırklareli, Ankara (Kalecik), Tokat (Central Anatolia) and Bornova, Bozcaada (Çanakkale) (Aegean). The best Turkish wines due to the climate considerations and consistency come mostly from Elazığ and Diyarbakır with Öküzgözü grapes, Ankara with Kalecik Karasi in red, and Tokat with Narince and Izmir with Misket in the white wine categories.
Enjoy this unique opportunity to explore a new world of wine unknown to even many of the world wine experts, and watch our web site for more articles on the topic of Turkish wine, coming soon.
